On November 29, 2021, the day that the negotiations for the revival of JCPOA began in Vienna, experts and research analysts from the International Institute for Peace (IIP) and Iran-Eurica participated in a joint webinar to discuss shared challenges and interests between Iran and Europe and highlighted common grounds for cooperation in the Middle East.
The event, entitled “Peace, Geopolitics, and Non-Proliferation in the Middle East.”, focused on the following topics:
- Europe and the Middle East;
- Prospects for Iran-Europe cooperation in the Middle East;
- The Impact of JCPOA on the Middle East;
- Europe’s role in the Middle East after US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Moderated by Stephanie Fenkart, the main discussions were presented by Hannes Swoboda (Ph.d), Saeed Anvari, Mostafa Kamrani, Prof. Heinz Gretner and Mohesen Hadian – in the order appeared in the video – after the introductory remarks by Fatemeh Farivar.
Dr. Hannes Swoboda, President of the International Institute for Peace (IIP), was Vice President of the Social Democrat Group until 2012 and then President until 2014. Swoboda is currently the President of the Vienna Institute for International Economics, the Centre of Architecture, the University for Applied Science – Campus Vienna, and the Sir Peter Ustinov Institute.
Saeed Anvari is Iran-Eurica’s Researcher in German Program. He holds two Master’s degrees in German studies and Political Science and is a Ph.D. candidate in Regional Studies at the University of Tehran. His research mainly focuses on Conservatism and State-building Processes.
Mostafa Kamrani is a Researcher for UK Program at Iran-Eurica. He graduated in English Language and Literature (B.A) and mastered British Studies from the University of Tehran. His main areas of research interests include UK Foreign Policy, Party Politics, and Parliamentarianism.
Prof. Heinz Gärtner is a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna and at Danube University. He chairs the Strategy and Security advisory board of the Austrian Armed Forces and the Advisory Board of the International Institute for Peace (IIP) in Vienna. He has published widely on international security, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, US foreign policy, geopolitics, Iran, and the Middle East.
Amir Mohsen Hadian is Iran-Eurica’s Researcher for US Program. He has an M.A. in British Studies and is a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies. His areas of research interest include Populism, US politics, US foreign policy, and Great Power Competition.
Stephanie Fenkart is the Director of the International Institute for Peace (IIP) since 2016. She is a member of the Advisory Committee for Strategy and Security Policy of the Scientific Commission at the Austrian Armed Forces (BMLV) and is also a board member of the NGO Committee for Peace, Vienna.
Fatemeh Farivar is Deputy Director of Research at Iran-Eurica. Formerly, she worked as a Research Analyst for the UK program at the institute. She is a graduate of British Studies at the University of Tehran. Her fields of research include UK foreign policy, European Union, and International Political economy.
