Being a determining factor in geopolitical dynamics, energy has been at the center of strategic discussions since the First World War. Oil and Gas resources have, indeed, played a key role in the last century’s tensions. Nonetheless, efforts to transition into a decarbonized world by using renewables have added a new dimension to the issue of energy security. Europe, as the forerunner of such attempts, is now entangled in the ongoing problems ensuing lack of energy supply, caused by the Ukraine War. On the one hand, the continent has become united to sanction Russian gas to put pressure on Putin’s advancements. On the other, it has inflicted the economic consequences of such embargoes and lack of supplies on itself. Whether the European countries succeed in evading these implications and containing Russian gas exports remains to be seen as the future of the War and the prospects of global energy transformation remain unclear.

Olivier Appert has joined one in a series of Iran-Eurica webinars on current European and global affairs to discuss this topic.

Prior to that, he headed the oil and gas department of the French Industry Ministry.
